Implicitly Defined Baseball Statistics

چکیده

Major League Baseball uses statistics to determine awards every season. The batting champion is given to the player with the highest batting average. The Cy Young Award is given to the top pitcher which is determined by many different statistics including earned run average (ERA). Batting average and ERA have been used for many years and are major statistics in baseball. Neither batting average or ERA consider the skill of the opposing pitcher or batter. Thus, every pitcher and batter is considered to have the same skill level. We develop an implicitly definded statistic that determines the skill or value of a player. The value of a batter and the value of a pitcher is based on the skill of the oppposing pitcher and batter respectively. We use linear algebra to find eigenvector solutions to the eigenvalue problem, Aλ = λx, which generates each player’s statistical value.

Effects of lumbar disk herniation on the careers of professional baseball players.

Outcomes after lumbar disk herniation in baseball athletes are currently unknown. It has been postulated that the repetitive torque-producing motions of a baseball player may have negative implications after a disk injury. Sixty-nine lumbar disk herniations (40 treated operatively, 29 nonoperatively) in 64 professional baseball players were identified, and important outcome measures including s...

Statistics-free Sports Prediction

We use a simple machine learning model, logistically-weighted regularized linear least squares regression, in order to predict baseball, basketball, football, and hockey games. We do so using only the thirty-year record of which visiting teams played which home teams, on what date, and what the final score was. No real ”statistics” are used. The method works best in basketball, likely because i...

Effects of Cover Stories on Problem Solving in a Statistics Course

Does having more knowledge or interest in the topics used in example problems facilitate or hinder learning in statistics? Undergraduates enrolled in Introductory Psychology received a lesson on central tendency. Following the lesson, half of the students completed a worksheet with a baseball cover story while the other half received a weather cover story. Learning was assessed using a quiz tha...

Predicting the Major League Baseball Season

This paper attempts to predict the outcome of games from the 2012 Major League Baseball season. Sporting events are very important to many people, and professional leagues are worth billions of dollars. Baseball, in particular, is not only one of the most popular sports in the United States, but the vast amount of recorded data and statistics made publicly available also lends itself well to ma...

Mean and Variance of Implicitly Defined Biased Estimators (Such as Penalized Maximum Likelihood): Ap - Image Processing, IEEE Transactions on

Many estimators in signal processing problems are defined implicitly as the maximum of some objective function. Examples of implicitly defined estimators include maximum likelihood, penalized likelihood, maximum a posteriori, and nonlinear least squares estimation. For such estimators, exact analytical expressions for the mean and variance are usually unavailable. Therefore, investigators usual...
